How to word a wedding RSVP

Clear wording gets more replies, sooner. Here is what to say, what to ask, and examples you can copy.

What the RSVP request should say

Keep it short: who is asking, by when, and how to reply. 'Kindly reply by 1 May' is enough on a formal card; 'Let us know by 1 May' suits a relaxed one.

If guests reply online, say where: your short link or the QR code.

Formal examples

The favour of a reply is requested by the first of May.

Kindly reply by 1 May at rsvpea.co.uk/emily-and-james.

Relaxed examples

Let us know if you can make it by 1 May: scan the code or visit our website.

We'd love you there. RSVP by 1 May, it takes ten seconds.

What to ask

Whether they are coming to each event, how many adults and children, meal choices if you are serving a set menu, and dietary needs. Ask only what you will use; every extra question slows replies.

When to set the deadline

Four to six weeks before the wedding gives you time to chase late replies and send final numbers to the venue, which most want around two to three weeks before.
